What is MEEHANITE metal?

MEEHANITE metal is cast iron produced by the patent MEEHANITE process. History of Meehanite goes back to the 1940s. Mr. G. F. Meehan of the United States discovered a new method to produce tough cast iron by using a special ingredient, called graphite. He continued investigation with Mr. O. Smally of UK who invented various cast iron materials by controlling the precipitation form of graphite and together they developed scientific control methods for the production of this new high class of cast irons. Later both of them established MEEHANITE Metal Corporation and licensed this process as the MEEHANITE process to licensee. They helped extend the application of this technique widely.
Only MEEHANITE licensee can produce MEEHANITE metal. Mitsui Meehanite Metal has been producing MEEHANITE metal as a licensee from its inception.
The production of MEEHANITE metal requires know-how. At first, molten melt must have suitable mechanical properties required by the casting. Not only is the chemical composition important but also the control of super-cooling treatment to varying degree as determined by the amount of graphite ensures the strength and toughness of the finished material. The MEEHANITE process is not limited to controlling only the melt and material properties but rather is a total and integrated approach with systematic methodologies to all aspects of the casting production starting with the techniques of the casting process.

Changing chemical composition and/or heat treatment gives steel good properties. Subjecting materials to high temperature and high pressure or low temperature and high pressure environment non-existent in its intended service life gives it good anti-corrosion properties against various acid and also good abrasive resistances. When combined with casting process and welding technology, steel casting is superior to other forming process and has advantages such as combining parts of complicated shapes and features, high rigidity and high air-tightness. In order to exploit castings' full advantages and to ensure that customers can use our products with a peace of mind, the key is to achieve high quality and a suitable quality control system in place. For this purpose we have developed excellent capability in using computer simulation to optimize melt flow and solidification. Also we have several melting furnaces and heat treatment furnaces for producing different kinds of material. For quality control we have various chemical analyzers and non-destructive test equipment including a radioactive apparatus with 4 radiation sources. We supply good quality products which consist of marine parts, various plant parts, generator or transformer parts, railway parts, construction machine parts, automobile parts and so on, all under recognition by Marital Class NK, Class LR and ISO9001. In order to meet ever stringent quality demands amidst further sophistication and diversification of our low volume and widely varying product portfolio and to maintain our customer satisfaction, we are a factory that continues to improve our quality control system day by day to achieve these goals.

New material of Tamano Steel Casting Division

This division produces "Spattering Target Material" and "Vapor Deposition Source" in addition to steel castings. Melting method of new material is different from that of steel casting. A vacuum induction melting furnace with CaO (calcia) crucible is used.
The melting process by CaO crucible is developed together by MES and Metal Research Co,. Ltd. This process has an excellent refining effect on metals and alloys. It can also lower oxygen, nitrogen and sulfur content to an extremely low level quickly by addition a suitable amount of aluminum under vacuum or in an argon environment.
Especially nitrogen and oxygen content can be lowered to one-tenth of the level achievable by other furnace.
Targets made by this method have low gas contents, no metal inclusions and a stable chemical composition. Our targets are used mainly for hard disk head production. Our targets are popular among customers because when their products are coated using our targets, uniform composition with no impurities and good yield have been realized.
At present we produce mainly targets used for head production, but we have also started supplying ultra-conductivity materials and sensor materials taking advantage of the wonderful character of low gas content and high-purity alloy.
